what if?

in the glow of embers softly burning bright,

we sat in silence, under the cloak of night.

two hearts entwined in the dance of chance,

yet bound by the chains of circumstance.

oh, how I hate missed opportunities, unspoken words

the melody unsung, the thought unheard.

like that night by the fire, with its flickering light,

when neither of us dared to break the tension which was clearly in sight

every day, it's the echo in my mind,

a constant reminder of what we left behind.

"what if?" whispers the ghost of the past,

a question in the shadows, forever cast.

what if you had kissed me in that moment so near,

would the path of our lives have steered clear?

would the sparks that flew in the silent air,

ignite a fire, a passion rare?

but we sat unmoved, though inside we burned,

too afraid of the pages we might have turned.

now it's the thought that daily haunts and occupies,

a sea of what ifs, under the endless skies.

oh, how I wish we had seized the day,

letting our fears and doubts fade away.

for in the dance of flames and the night so still,

lay a chance for love, if only we had the will.

so here I stand, with memories so tender,

of the night by the fire, and the chance we didn't render.

a lesson learned in the heart's quiet plea,

to embrace the moment, and let what will be, be.

now you're merely a whisper, a fleeting thought adrift in the silence of my mind.
